Mr Ran Li is an Australian trained specialist oncoplastic breast surgeon with international subspecialty fellowship experience. He has a strong interest in research and clinical trials. He takes a compassionate and personalised approach to treating each patient and providing the best possible care. For his breast surgery patients, he always aims to achieve the best possible cosmetic result without compromising cancer outcomes.
Mr Li graduated from The University of Melbourne medical school in 2010 and completed his general surgical training through the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2018. Following this, he completed a PhD through the University of Melbourne and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He moved to Perth to complete a fellowship in breast surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). He then went on to complete further subspecialty fellowship training in oncoplastic breast surgery and endocrine surgery at the Nightingale & Genesis Breast Cancer Centre, a recognised centre of excellence based at the University Hospital of South Manchester and one of the largest breast cancer centres in Europe. In Manchester, he trained with breast surgeons and plastic surgeons, learning advanced modern oncoplastic breast surgery techniques.
He consults at Perth Breast Cancer Institute located at Hollywood Consulting Centre and operates at Hollywood Private Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Osborne Park Hospital.
He is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
Research and Teaching
Mr Li is actively involved in research and teaching. He completed his PhD on HER2-positive breast cancer and immunotherapy through the University of Melbourne and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre . He is a recipient of the competitive NHMRC postgraduate scholarship, the National Breast Cancer Foundation scholarship and the RACS Foundation for Surgery Research Scholarship. His research has been awarded the prestigious Basic Science Scholar Award at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium as well as the RJS Thomas Translational Research Prize. He has authored over 20 peer reviewed publications with more than 600 cumulative citations, including in high impact factor journals such as Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and Cancer Cell. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and regularly teaches medical students and surgical trainees.
Surgical Procedures
Mr Ran Li offers the full range of breast and oncoplastic surgery procedures including lumpectomy, mastectomy, axillary surgery, therapeutic mammoplasty, perforator flaps (partial breast reconstruction), implant based reconstruction, LD flap autologous reconstruction, breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty), breast lift (mastopexy), nipple reconstruction, lipomodelling and breast augmentation. He also offers revisional surgery for patients who are unsatisfied with their cosmetic results following previous breast surgery.
Mr Li has a special interest in partial breast reconstruction techniques, which means removing all the cancerous or pre-cancerous changes in the breast without the need to perform a mastectomy, whilst still achieving an excellent cosmetic result. For those patients who require or choose to have a mastectomy, most would be able to have an immediate breast reconstruction.
He also performs laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for hernias and gall bladder disease, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, melanoma, as well as most other general surgery procedures.
